Our Score
Adapted from a rousing thriller novel by Eric Ambler, this is often identified as Orson Welles's third feature film, though he claimed to have acted only as co-writer (with star Joseph Cotten) and producer. (Norman Foster, a veteran of the Mr Moto and Charlie Chan mysteries was credited as director). Logic takes something of a back seat in this sometimes bewildering tale of espionage in Turkey during the Second World War, in which Cotten plays a US Navy engineer pursued by Nazi agents. The narrative shortcomings suggest studio interference, but are more than made up for by the atmospheric camera angles - Welles's claims aside, the film bears all the hallmarks of his directing style - and the gallery of disreputable characters. It doesn't matter if you get lost along the way, just hang on for the fabulous finale.

An American engineer based in Turkey discovers he has been marked for death by the Gestapo, and flees the country on a steam ship. However, he finds out the Nazis have agents on board the vessel, leaving him with nowhere to hide. Espionage drama based on Eric Ambler's novel, starring Joseph Cotten, Orson Welles and Dolores Del Rio.
