Our Score
British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen struck gold with Borat and employs similar tactics for Brüno, which follows him as a gay Austrian fashion journalist on a mission to become world famous. Once again Baron Cohen goes under cover in the US (albeit in the most conspicuous way) to bait bigots and get belly laughs. As his journey unfolds, he mocks celebrities and shoves his partially clothed self (bum first) into the faces of conservative Americans. But this time he also ventures to the Middle East and ends up being chased, Benny Hill-style, by angry clerics. This makes for moments that are both funny and toe-curling. But Baron Cohen is also guilty of staging cheap and lazy gags (mostly involving Brüno's "romantic" misadventures), and it's a no-holds-barred approach that will offend some people. Overall it's a hit-and-miss affair that works best when Baron Cohen doesn't just make a spectacle of himself but shines a spotlight on the real-life oddballs along his way.

A gay Austrian fashion journalist becomes a figure of hate in his own country, and heads to America in search of celebrity with his adoring assistant in tow. He embarks on a campaign of publicity stunts to make himself famous, encountering prejudice and meeting people similarly desperate for stardom. Spoof documentary, starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Gustaf Hammarsten.
