Horror starring Eric Stoltz. Martin Brundle, the son of doomed scientist Seth Brundle, is born in a larval sac and raised in laboratory conditions. By the age of five, he is a fully grown genius and sets out to finish his father's work on the teleportation machine. But progress is interrupted when a personal betrayal and a curious physical metamorphosis start to colour Martin's view of the world.
Exactly what you'd expect from special effects and make-up artist-turned-director Chris Walas -too much emphasis on gore galore and scant attention paid to plot. Not that there is one, really merely sketchy broad strokes showing Son of the Fly going berserk in a labyrinthine biochemical laboratory. Eric Stoltz does what he can encased in rubber as the misunderstood larva, but it goes without saying that this obvious sequel, inspired more by Alien, has none of the sly subtlety, horrific elegance or poignant humour David Cronenberg brought to his superior 1986 film. Still, the Muppet-style deformed dog is a laugh.
