Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Barbra Streisand returned to the role for which she won (or, more accurately, shared, with Katharine Hepburn) her 1968 best actress Oscar, continuing the fictionalised story of Ziegfeld Follies star Fanny Brice for producer Ray Stark (the man behind Funny Girl who also happened to be Fanny Brice's son-in-law). Whereas Funny Girl had the benefit of being directed by the great William Wyler, this sequel suffers a little in the hands of choreographer-turned-director Herbert Ross, who can't quite control the clichés of the plot or the rowdy performance of James Caan as showman Billy Rose. Still, the musical numbers are fine, particularly Streisand's rendition of I Found a Million Dollar Baby in a Five and Ten Cent Store, which makes full use of the Panavision frame, and there's some fancy footwork from Ben Vereen, plus a welcome guest appearance from Funny Girl co-star Omar Sharif.
