Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

A review of this most beloved of comedies almost writes itself. Mocking many of the character traits that supposedly made this nation great, few films are as essentially British as Genevieve. The good-natured round of confrontations and calamities that befall John Gregson, Dinah Sheridan, Kenneth More and Kay Kendall during the London to Brighton vintage car rally are familiar to generations of movie-goers and, even though each disaster is more predictable than the last, there is unending pleasure to be had in observing the reactions of the childish, overzealous chauvinists and their teasing, long-suffering partners. The performances are a joy, the soundtrack by harmonica maestro Larry Adler unforgettable.
