Forever Young

Forever Young

Steve Miner (1992)

PG Certificate

Our Score
This humdrum romantic fantasy is no more than a minor entry in the Mel Gibson canon. The star obviously had to dig deep to find the enthusiasm to carry off his tired role, playing a cryogenic Rip Van Winkle who wakes 53 years after he was frozen and forgotten. Hollywood used to churn out this kind of fluff with practised ease and it's a pity director Steve Miner couldn't have found the same winning formula here. That said, the reunions are touching, Jamie Lee Curtis provides charming support, and at least we're spared the usual smug time-lapse jokes.

A 1930s test pilot is devastated when his sweetheart is left in a coma. Unable to cope with waiting to see if she wakes up, he volunteers to be a subject for a cryonics experiment. However, he ends up being on ice for 50 years, until two boys discover him. The youngsters' mother helps him adjust to the strange new world he has found himself in - and romance soon blossoms. Romantic sci-fi drama, with Mel Gibson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Elijah Wood and George Wendt.
