In this gritty police drama, three disparate New York cops hurtle towards their dates with destiny, their paths only briefly crossing as they face personal and professional hardships on the city's mean streets. Jaded veteran patrolman Richard Gere is counting down the days during his last week before retirement, troubled family man Ethan Hawke contemplates stealing the drugs money his squad has seized in a series of raids, while undercover agent Don Cheadle is caught between doing the right thing for his coldly manipulative superiors and helping a gang leader he's befriended (Wesley Snipes) avoid justice. The violent outbursts are often shocking but rarely gratuitous, as director Antoine Fuqua returns to the familiar territory of his Oscar-winning Training Day, weaving together three storylines with confidence and a steady hand. Of the three leads, Cheadle is the most impressive, giving a textured performance that keeps the narrative rooted in realism.
