Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

The very epitome of feel-good, this uplifting comedy drama has become one of the most successful French films ever made. It certainly benefited from the positive worldwide response to The Artist but is actually cut from a very different, if equally inspirational, cloth. Philippe (François Cluzet) is a billionaire businessman who's been left paralysed from the neck down by a paragliding accident. He advertises for a live-in carer, and winds up with young offender Driss (Omar Sy), a Senegalese immigrant whose cocky, carefree attitude to life, love and paralysis may not be what the doctor ordered, but is exactly what Philippe wants and needs. Their burgeoning, very amusing chalk-and-cheese relationship forms the core of a big-hearted movie and is excellently played by both leads. A Hollywood remake, "The Upside", was released in 2017, starring Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart.
