Drama starring Dirk Bogarde and Charlotte Rampling. Vienna, 1957: Max, an ex-SS officer, is working as a night porter in a luxury hotel, where some of his wartime colleagues are also hiding. The situation becomes complicated when Max's ex-lover Lucia, a former concentration camp inmate, reappears.
What happens when former SS officer Dirk Bogarde and concentration camp inmate Charlotte Rampling meet years after the war and pick up their sadomasochistic sexual relationship more or less where they left off? Not quite the examination of the Nazi legacy in political and allegorical terms that director Liliana Cavani probably hoped for; her self-conscious celebration of self-disgust and degradation certainly preoccupied the censors. Mere sexploitation or a serious analysis of guilty repression? The debate still rages.
