Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

This noisy but lazy fantasy epic is notable mainly for the fact that it boasts two Oscar winners in leading roles. Fresh from her multi-award-winning success in Still Alice (not too mention herdraining turn in Maps to the Stars), Julianne Moore probably deserved something a little less taxing, and looks to be enjoying herself as a wicked witch out to unleash the forces of darkness against humankind. However, Jeff Bridges is annoyingly hammy as her old nemesis, the last surviving member of an ancient order charged with battling demonic forces. Ben Barnes and Alicia Vikander, meanwhile, provide the eye candy as Bridges's latest apprentice and Moore's niece, respectively. Although director Sergei Bodrov stages some eye-catching set pieces, he can't seem to make up his mind whether he is making a family blockbuster, a tween-friendly fantasy or something a little darker for the grown-ups, and the result is a muddled mish-mash.
