When Maria (The Golden Compass's Dakota Blue Richards) is orphaned, she is forced to leave her London home to live with her reclusive uncle (Ioan Gruffudd) on the rambling Moonacre estate. An inlaid book tells of the legend of the moon princess (of the De Noir clan), her love for Sir Wrolf Merryweather, and the subsequent feud over the precious moon pearls between the De Noir and Merryweather families. Soon Maria finds herself in the midst of a quest to find the magical pearls and reunite the residents of Moonacre valley before it's too late. Loosely based on the book The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge, this version of the tale is lovingly designed with exquisite costumes and lavish sets. But, with the exception of Richards's strong central performance, the main characters seem stifled by their surroundings, with Gruffudd unconvincing as a sort of gruff Mr Rochester type and Tim Curry a sad caricature of his former self. One of the key relationships in the book between Robin De Noir (Augustus Prew) and Maria has been virtually eliminated here, although Juliet Stevenson as Maria's governess, Mrs Heliotrope, and miniature chef Marmaduke Scarlet, played by Andy Linden, do offer a breath of comic fresh air. Despite its failings, this is still well worth watching - if only for the incredible engineering involved in making Maria's dresses.

When her father dies, 13-year-old Maria is sent to live with her eccentric uncle in Moonacre Manor. The youngster finds herself drawn into a magical conflict when she learns she is destined to become the last Moon Princess and is charged with unearthing secrets of the past to prevent the mystical kingdom disappearing forever. Fantasy adventure set in the 19th century, starring Dakota Blue Richards, Ioan Gruffudd and Tim Curry.
