Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Strawberry-picking season on a Kent farm is the unusual setting for a rites-of-passage psychological drama from a BBC-supported scheme designed to foster new film-making talent. Director/co-writer Frances Lea effectively draws us into the action when newcomer Gillian (Anna Madeley) arrives alone and tentatively befriends her fellow pickers, capturing the attention of the confident Kev (Emun Elliott). Everything changes, however, with the entrance of Emily (Christine Bottomley), Gillian's flamboyant yet needy sibling, who seems determined to crush her sister's hopes of independence. Convincing performances from the female leads create the sense of an intimate, yet hopelessly conflicted family bond with a history that's led up to this flashpoint, and the understanding of each sister's story certainly proves involving. It's a pity the ending feels rather more forced than the simmering tensions that precede it, but the atmospheric location-filming is another positive in a production whose modest resources never inhibit its creative enterprise.
