Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

After mining horrors in Shaun of the Dead and action movies in Hot Fuzz, director Edgar Wright plunders the sci-fi genre for the concluding part of his Cornetto trilogy. This time the easy-going comic partnership of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost anchors a very British alien takeover in suburban Newton Haven, as the pair are joined by three other old friends (Eddie Marsan, Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman) to complete a pub crawl started during their school days. But those pesky, blue-blooded robot replicas wanting to bring Earth into intergalactic line just keep getting in the way! Once more, Wright cleverly remoulds a beloved genre through his own fanboy cinephilia, producing many laugh-out-loud moments and only a few juvenile clunkers. The barmaggedon scenario eventually treads familiar ground and overdoes the action spectacle, but there's an engaging chemistry between the five boozers, while the surprise cameos, early 1990s indie soundtrack, zany violence and visual effects add to a self-aware, matey romp that slips down a treat.
