Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

In this typically unremarkable but watchable Hollywood romantic comedy, quirky Greta Gerwig plays Lola, a 29-year-old New Yorker who is dumped on the eve of their wedding by her longtime boyfriend (Joel Kinnaman). Going into grief mode, Lola careens back and forth between her friends, her ex and her new lovers like some crazed human pinball. Essentially, she's that stock romantic comedy character: the over-dependent neurotic who feels she can't function without a fella. Despite its indie trappings, the movie never quite escapes such stereotypes, and often wallows just as much as its leading lady. But Gerwig is a likeably offbeat comedy actress, and Bill Pullman and Debra Winger offer pleasing cameos as her laid-back parents. There are some sparky bits of dialogue, too, which make this just about worth the watch.
