Review

A star rating of 5 out of 5.

In a run-down corner of Tennessee, a volunteer football coach battles to help a high-school team better themselves and overcome over 100 years of underachievement. It sounds like the stuff of too many sports dramas, but this wonderful, Oscar-winning documentary is the real thing. The big games, injury crises and personality conflicts are all present, but the effect is so much more powerful here because film-makers Dan Lindsay and TJ Martin understand that what we're watching is more about building character than it is about winning games. On the surface, the film's portrait of a wise and near-saintly white coach trying to improve the lives of a bunch of underprivileged young black men might seem like a cliché, but as the mixed fortunes of the group unfold, it becomes clear that the story's lessons of discipline feeding advancement are universal - and gripping viewing, to boot. It doesn't matter if you know little, and care even less, about American football; as events reach a climax, you won't be just watching this inspirational film, you'll feel like you're living it.
