Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

"He put balls on Chinese men" is just one of the pithy observations offered about Bruce Lee in this comprehensive appreciation of the martial arts icon. Longtime fans may think they already know all they need to know about the charismatic star, with numerous documentaries and an entertaining biopic (1993's Dragon: the Bruce Lee Story) released since his death in 1973. And it's true that the usual rags-to-riches chronology is covered here. However, thanks to rarely seen archive footage (including Lee teaching superstar pupil James Coburn in his back garden) dovetailed with judicious footage from TV interviews and his unforgettable film performances, this still manages to be fresh and revealing. Rat-a-tat sound bites from family, friends and admirers (Mickey Rourke always gives good interview) add to the interest. Bringing things right up-to-date, Lee's hailed by some as the father of the increasingly popular sport of mixed martial arts, one of whose exponents, Gina Carano (star of Haywire), has a bit of a "moment" as she muses over Lee's sheer on-screen virility. More poignant is friend, student and Jeet Kune Do tutor Dan Inosanto, who is literally lost for words when asked about Lee's untimely passing.
