In this entertaining third episode in the animated prehistoric comedy series, the computer-imaging techniques of Blue Sky Studios - once the underdog behind Pixar and DreamWorks - attain new subtleties of texture, scale and depth. Unfortunately, the story is a little thin, taking a cheeky historical liberty by creating a tropical lost world under the ice, where preserved dinosaurs lie in wait to snare young viewers. Ray Romano and Denis Leary are back as the voices of mammoth Manny and sabre-toothed tiger Diego, this time attempting to rescue Sid the sloth (John Leguizamo) after he gets in trouble adopting three dinosaur eggs. This narrative decision feels commercially driven, and the jeopardy milked from it lacks continuity with the other, glacially inclined films. Thankfully, spectacle, including a terrific computer-game-mimicking pterodactyl chase and more high-wire larks from Scrat the sabre-toothed squirrel, is never far away. Buck, the Johnny Depp-modelled pirate weasel (voiced by Simon Pegg), brings welcome comic energy, but some may think the franchise is starting to wear thin.

Plot Summary

Animated comedy adventure featuring the voices of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo and Denis Leary. Sid the sloth grows jealous of his mammoth friend Manny's impending fatherhood, and "adopts" three eggs that hatch into baby dinosaurs. The arrival of the mother - a T-rex - opens up a whole new world to Sid and his herd.
