Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Ice Cube replaces Vin Diesel for this second instalment in the thick-ear action franchise. Cube, the thinking man's Mr T, plays an imprisoned special ops soldier who's sprung by Samuel L Jackson's shadowy NSA agent to thwart Willem Dafoe's military coup against US President Peter Strauss. The plot blends Seven Days in May with a typical Bond film, say Die Another Day, which is coincidentally the work of xXx 2 director Lee Tamahori. It's not as good as either, despite one or two exciting set pieces, but it's entertaining enough for the video game generation who'll doubtless relish the fact that the last 20 minutes look exactly like something out of a PlayStation shoot 'em up. And one can only pity poor Mr Diesel, who reportedly priced himself out of this follow-up and is here dismissed with a perfunctory "he died last night in Bora Bora".
