Our Score
Post-Pearl Harbor, it seems there was nothing more important over at 20th Century-Fox than whether handsome Tyrone Power or rugged Dana Andrews would land up with pretty Anne Baxter. Since this was Ty's last movie before his own Second World War service, and since he's also top-billed, you've probably guessed the result. But stick with this submarine adventure (it's dull in patches) to witness Hollywood propaganda at its most blatant, as Technicolor (mainly model) submarines duck and dive in a welter of special effects. The effects won an Oscar (Fred Sersen for visuals, Roger Heman for sound).

Summary

On the eve of departing for a dangerous mission, a submariner falls for a schoolteacher, unaware she is the sweetheart of his commanding officer. On board, the two men eventually discover they are romantic rivals, but form a close bond as they concentrate on their duty and the task of destroying enemy U-boats. Romantic wartime drama, starring Tyrone Power, Dana Andrews, Anne Baxter, May Whitty and Harry Morgan.
