Arnold Schwarzenegger takes on his first lead role for ten years here, having retired as governor of California. He stars as former Los Angeles narcotics squad detective Ray Owens, who's coasting towards retirement as the sheriff of a sleepy town near the border with Mexico. But when the boss of a drugs cartel (Eduardo Noriega) escapes from FBI custody and heads Ray's way, he and his motley crew of deputies are faced with stopping the bad guy by any means necessary. Close examination of the hole-riddled plot may invite more questions than answers, but director Kim Jee-woon wisely concentrates on thrilling shoot-outs and explosions, ticking just about every box long-term Arnie fans will want ticked. Schwarzenegger gamely mocks his own action-hero persona, while Johnny Knoxville provides abundant comic relief as the misfit owner of an artillery museum who's drafted in to help save the day.
