3 out of 5
In this good-looking but hyperactive third film in the animated franchise, Alex the Lion and co are still animals abroad, and desperate to get back home to the New York zoo they escaped from. But, courtesy of encounters with a European travelling circus and a dogged French animal-control officer (Frances McDormand, a new addition to the voice cast), they soon discover that you have to be careful what you wish for - because you just might get it. As ever, the "mobster" penguins effortlessly steal a show that lurches maniacally from one haphazard scene to another, too often mistaking franticness for fun. It may lack a little in charm and warmth, but the technical brilliance and decent use of 3D go some way towards compensating for the dimensions that the film otherwise lacks.
Plot Summary
The escaped zoo animals continue their quest to get back to their New York home. Having made it to Monte Carlo, they join a circus on a European tour as a means of travelling undetected - but an animal control agent is in hot pursuit. Animated comedy, with the voices of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett Smith.
