An understated yet expressive lead performance distracts from all the clichés in this watchable crime drama about parenting and second chances. Scott Patterson adds depth to his small-town stereotype, playing a Rocky Mountains ex-sheriff and expert tracker who takes to the mean streets of Chicago to try to clear his estranged son of murder. Though his deduction-based, investigation process is often a little hard to swallow - causing predictable conflict with Polly Shannon's sceptical, no-nonsense city cop - it's the subtle handling of the emotional and family issues that motivate this contrived detective work that keeps the film interesting. You can really feel the regret in Patterson's affectingly human character, which makes the reconciliatory finale, in particular, inevitable but satisfying.
