Trained killer Aaron Cross (a steely Jeremy Renner) goes on the run with a genetic scientist (a sympathetic Rachel Weisz) who holds the secret to his enhanced biology. They're both targeted for assassination when their top secret programme is shut down in the public fallout of the Jason Bourne saga. After a convoluted beginning, in which it confusingly connects with all three previous Bourne movies and overlaps with events in Ultimatum, director Tony Gilroy (writer of the four films in the Robert Ludlum-based franchise) begins to pick up the pace. There's a tense shoot-out in Weisz's home and a motorbike chase finale through Manila's crowded streets that delivers big on thrills. But while Gilroy offers visual excitement and constantly building action, he too often resorts to imitating the stylistic quirks of former Bourne director Paul Greengrass, which means the stunts don't have as big an impact. However, this is still a nimble and well-crafted chase thriller.

Plot Summary

The leaders of a secret government agency plan to eliminate several agents as part of a cover-up when they face having their dark secrets exposed. One of the assassins targeted is able to evade his fate and go on the run - but his escape is threatened by his dependence on drugs to boost his physical and mental capabilities. Spy thriller sequel, with Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton.
