Our Score
Not to be confused with a 1947 Hopalong Cassidy adventure, this routine western has a staple story at its heart - powerful ranchers hire muscle to force squatters, lowlifes and emigrants off their land. At the first skirmish the squatters win, killing the rancher and his son. But then Dan Duryea, a book-keeper who fancies himself as a military strategist and calls himself "The General", gets control of the ranch and initiates all-out range war. This is the scenario perfected first by Shane and then, later, by Heaven's Gate, though this MGM effort never assumes to rise above its B-movie station.

A courageous homesteader refuses to give in to the strong-arm tactics employed by a ruthless businessman - but things take a turn for the worse when the magnate dies, leaving a murderous madman to carry on his campaign of intimidation. Western, starring Dan Duryea, Jeff Richards, Keenan Wynn and Jarma Lewis.
