Our Score
Panned in its day, this Arabian Nights farrago does have elements to recommend it now, notably muscular baritone Howard Keel having the time of his life. He brings enormous energy to his role as Haaj the beggar, whose daughter has fallen for a caliph, filling the screen with his unfairly maligned performance. The rest of the cast also works hard, particularly the raunchy Dolores Gray, and Ann Blyth and Vic Damone make a perfectly acceptable pair of lovebirds and get all the best songs, especially the hit Stranger in Paradise.

A penniless poet in ancient Baghdad finds his life on the line after a case of mistaken identity. It proves to be only the first in a series of strange twists of fate, but he uses his cunning to stay ahead of his enemies and rise to a position of power. Musical fantasy, starring Howard Keel and Ann Blyth. Featuring songs based on music by Borodin, including Stranger in Paradise and Baubles, Bangles and Beads.
