The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Our Score
It's the story that just won't stop. Stieg Larsson's three novels were international bestsellers and spawned a successful Swedish film trilogy, with Noomi Rapace as computer hacker antiheroine Lisbeth Salander. Despite the familiarity of the material, director David Fincher manages to make this version feel fresh and surprising. This is largely thanks to Rooney Mara, whose Lisbeth is an otherworldly, damaged creature, although Daniel Craig gives a pleasantly restrained performance as disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist. The two are brought together when Blomkvist is hired by wealthy industrialist Henrik Vanger (a magnificent Christopher Plummer) to investigate the murder of his niece nearly 40 years ago. As the pair gets closer to the truth in the remote north of Sweden, they find their own lives in danger. Fincher really makes the story his own, concentrating on the themes of sex, sadism and power so common to his work: there's more than a touch of Se7en here. And Steven Zaillian's screenplay is superb, capturing the essence of the book in a pared-down script as sparse as the beautifully shot frozen landscape. Despite the occasionally ropey Swedish accents and an opening credits sequence that's like a gothic Bond movie, this is taut, gripping film-making, and it certainly won't be the last we hear of Lisbeth Salander.

A disgraced journalist is approached by an industrialist to investigate the 40-year unsolved murder of his grand-niece. The reporter enlists the aid of a mysterious computer hacker with a traumatic past to help crack the case, but they uncover a complex web of corruption and conspiracy. David Fincher's remake of the Swedish thriller, starring Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara and Christopher Plummer.
