Countess Dracula

Countess Dracula

Peter Sasdy (1970)

18 Certificate

Our Score
In order to masquerade as her own daughter, an ageing countess begins bathing in the blood of virgins to restore her youth in this colourful hokum, which gives a new meaning to the word bloodbath. The first lady of British horror movies, Ingrid Pitt, excels as the countess, and she's ably supported by Nigel Green as the faithful retainer who procures her victims, Sandor Eles as her dashing love interest, and a host of Hammer stalwarts as the typically irate villagers. Based on the legend of notorious Hungarian countess Elizabeth Bathory, the film atones for its lack of terror with a brittle atmosphere of regret and decay.

A Hungarian countess discovers bathing in the blood of virgins is the secret of eternal youth, and demands her lover bring her a steady stream of victims. However, her affair with another man turns him against her, while the spate of disappearing young women arouses suspicion. Hammer horror, starring Ingrid Pitt, Nigel Green and Lesley-Anne Down.
