Our Score
Hollywood plunders the world cinema archives once again for this insipid remake of a Japanese hit. In westernising Masayuki Suo's 1995 dance-floor delight, this romantic comedy drama loses the warmth and wry social observation that gave the original its appeal. To his credit, Richard Gere makes a charming lead, playing a jaded Chicago lawyer and family man who secretly takes up ballroom dancing lessons. Unfortunately, the casting of Jennifer Lopez as his dance instructor is where the film falls down. She might look good, but her miserable demeanour is a real downer in a tale that's meant to be light, frothy and life-affirming. With no chemistry between the two leads, there's little sense of the passion their moves are supposed to elicit. Only Stanley Tucci as a clandestine salsa addict demonstrates any genuine vitality and joy, but his humorous performance isn't enough to save this clumsy feature.

A bored workaholic lawyer becomes fixated with a beautiful dance teacher and enrols in her class. When she flatly rejects his advances, he decides to concentrate on perfecting his footwork - but keeps the new hobby a secret, making his wife very suspicious about the amount of time he is spending away from home. Romantic comedy, starring Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon and Jennifer Lopez.
