Our Score
In 1966, basketball coach Don Haskins led his Texas Western Miners team to victory in the NCAA championship by fielding the first-ever all-black starting line-up. He made history and changed the game of American basketball for ever. This watchable Disney movie follows Haskins (Josh Lucas) as he arrives at the run-down Texas college and drafts in African-American players, among them Bobby Joe Hill (played by Notorious star Derek Luke). Slamdunk basketball action is interspersed with the players' experience of racial prejudice before the film gears up for a final showdown against a rival team fielded by a bigoted coach (Jon Voight). Polished ensemble playing captures the strangeness of being black in El Paso in the 60s, and a feel-good soundtrack of Motown hits keeps it all chugging along smoothly. Real-life members of the historic team talk about their personal experiences during the end credits, which makes a welcome antidote to all the soft-focus schmaltz.

A basketball coach takes over a college team in 1960s Texas, but his decision to recruit black people causes uproar. Determined to enlist the best players possible, he sets out to lead his team to the national championships. Sporting drama based on a true story, starring Josh Lucas, Jon Voight and Derek Luke.
