Review

Our Score
John Wayne may seem unlikely casting as a railroad engineer in this epic saga, but he's actually very good at conveying the steely determination required of his character. It's certainly entertaining enough, though a stronger director than Richard Wallace may well have got more out of the romance between the Duke and mine-owner's daughter Laraine Day. Nevertheless, there's a very distinguished supporting cast, including Cedric Hardwicke, Judith Anderson (Rebecca's Mrs Danvers) and a mean Anthony Quinn, all of whom help the long running time zip by, and it's shot in exceptionally fine Technicolor. Today, this would be a TV mini-series.

Summary

A civil engineer assigned to build a railroad through the South American Andes causes friction when he refuses to work on a proposed tunnel through the mountains. He eventually gets his own way, and it looks as if he and his arrogant employer will settle their differences - until the engineer falls for his boss's daughter. Romantic drama, starring John Wayne, Cedric Hardwicke, Laraine Day and Anthony Quinn.
