Homeless to Harvard: the Liz Murray Story

Homeless to Harvard: the Liz Murray Story

Peter Levin (2003)

Our Score
Thora Birch was nominated for an Emmy for her performance in this true-story drama, which was co-executive produced by its subject, Liz Murray. Born into an impoverished Bronx family, Murray spent much of her early life in squalid housing or public hostels. Her father was a drug addict, and her mother was schizophrenic, legally blind and HIV-positive. However, at the age of 15, Murray turned her life around and re-entered high school, eventually winning a scholarship to Harvard. Director Peter Levin lays on the melodrama, but Birch still manages to convey Murray's despair and renewed spirit, while Kelly Lynch impresses as her tragic but caring mother.

Fact-based drama chronicling the tale of a neglected child who overcame her poverty-stricken and traumatic beginnings to achieve her dream of academic success at the prestigious American university. Starring Thora Birch, Michael Riley, Robert Bockstael and Makyla Smith.
