Review

Our Score
Despite the pantomime efforts of Helen Mirren and a script packed with bitchy one-liners from debut director Kevin Williamson (the witty, postmodern genius behind the Scream trilogy and TV's Dawson's Creek), this black comedy falls uncomfortably between serious and comedic. Mirren plays the eponymous, mean-spirited history teacher who stands in the way of student Katie Holmes and her Harvard scholarship. After an incident with an exam paper, Holmes and two friends end up tying Mrs Tingle to a bed and have 48 hours to turn the situation around. Originally called Killing Mrs Tingle and amended after the Columbine High School shootings, this is only really worth watching for Mirren.

Summary

High school student Leigh Ann needs to finish top of her class in order to win a university scholarship, but faces an immovable obstacle in the shape of history teacher Mrs Tingle, who doesn't think her work up to scratch. When Leigh Ann is falsely accused of cheating on an exam, she resorts to desperate measures, kidnapping Mrs Tingle to try to force her to change her mind. Comedy thriller, starring Helen Mirren, Katie Holmes and Jeffrey Tambor.
