The King and I

The King and I

Walter Lang (1956)

Our Score
Yul Brynner re-created his Broadway King for posterity in this faithful adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein's marvellous Broadway success about English governess Anna Leonowens and her sexless romance with the King of Siam. Brynner is magnificent and he deservedly picked up a best actor Oscar for what is unquestionably a great performance. As Mrs Anna, Deborah Kerr is both resolute and touching, with an unbilled Marni Nixon dubbing her voice for such delights as Hello Young Lovers. Unfortunately, 20th Century-Fox's use of its own DeLuxe Color severely lets down the production design - if ever a film needed Technicolor, it was this one. And a stronger director than Walter Lang would also have been beneficial, but if you've never seen it, prepare to be enchanted.

The relationship between the powerful King of Siam and a widowed English schoolteacher, recruited to tutor his wives and many children, begins with restrained hostility - but gradually gives way to more tender feelings. Oscar-winning Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, starring Deborah Kerr, Yul Brynner, Rita Moreno, Martin Benson and Terry Saunders.
