How to Get Ahead in Advertising

How to Get Ahead in Advertising

Bruce Robinson (1989)

Our Score
After the truly wonderful Withnail & I, this comic follow-up, which reunited Richard E Grant with writer/director Bruce Robinson, proved something of a disappointment. Grant plays the troubled advertising executive who develops an evil alter ego: a boil that can not only talk but is intent on taking over his whole body. There are some neat, surreal touches from Robinson, another manic performance from Grant and a solid supporting cast, which includes Rachel Ward, Richard Wilson and Susan Wooldridge. However, the evil side of advertising is too broad and too obvious a target for Robinson to get his teeth into.

An advertising executive is driven to the brink of a nervous breakdown by his inability to come up with a slogan for his latest client. Disillusioned with consumerism, he resolves to give up his career, when a boil on his neck starts growing into a second head, which is determined to take over his body and return him to the money-grabbing worldview he is desperate to escape. Satirical comedy, with Richard E Grant, Rachel Ward and Richard Wilson.
