Our Score
After his brilliant One False Move, director Carl Franklin made all the right moves with this atmospheric thriller. It's a supremely stylish movie, with Denzel Washington as Ezekial "Easy" Rawlins, a man with time on his hands who's hired to find a politician's girlfriend (Jennifer Beals), and in the process is framed for murder. From the thriller by Walter Mosley that introduced the character of black private eye Rawlins, the film has a timberyard full of sawn-off dialogue and enough high-voltage tension to work an electric chair. It is also blessed by a scene-stealing performance from Don Cheadle as Rawlins's energetically homicidal best friend, Mouse.

A down-on-his-luck 1940s private eye is hired to find a missing femme fatale an ex-girlfriend of a local aspiring politician. However, his trail through the sleazy streets and jazz clubs of Los Angeles uncovers political corruption, racism and murder - and places himself in the line of fire. Thriller based on Walter Mosley's novel, starring Denzel Washington and Don Cheadle.
