Fanny by Gaslight

Our Score
In this Gainsborough period drama, Phyllis Calvert plays the politician's illegitimate daughter whose unfortunate childhood threatens her future happiness. Adapted from a controversial Michael Sadleir novel, it's more luridly Hogarthian than usual and, despite being visually sanitised, it doesn't hesitate in drawing attention to the sleazier corners of Victorian society. James Mason (as evil aristocrat.Lord Manderstoke) and Stewart Granger (as Fanny's suitor Harry Somerford) swagger in appropriate fashion and both profited from their performances here. It seems mighty innocent now, but it caused quite a fuss in its day.

A dissolute Victorian aristocrat manipulates the lives of those around him for his own gain, but sows the seeds of his downfall when he sets out to seduce a government minister's innocent daughter, whose life is dogged by ill fortune. Period drama, starring Phyllis Calvert, James Mason, Stewart Granger and Wilfrid Lawson.
