Review

Our Score
Big John Wayne found himself trapped between two major war movies, working out his Republic contract in a western directed by a studio hack, which despite a strong support cast (including Walter Brennan, 14 years before Rio Bravo), is fairly typical of that minor studio's output. Even the female lead is played by Vera Hruba Ralston, wife of the studio head. Ironically, Dakota's original story was by left-winger Carl Foreman, later blacklisted by those who shared Wayne's right-wing views. Wayne rides to the rescue of farmers whose valuable land is targeted by crooks, but his heart doesn't seem to be in it.

Summary

A professional gambler and a railway tycoon's daughter elope, hoping to make their fortune by buying land in Dakota. However, they instead find themselves helping the local farmers defend their homes against unscrupulous businessmen trying to drive them off their land. Western, starring John Wayne and Vera Hruba Ralston.
