Our Score
This cosy comedy sees five friends reunited at the funeral of their childhood basketball coach, who led them to victory as schoolboys. They then spend the Fourth of July holiday at a lake house with their families - it's the first time they've all got together in 30 years, and while some things are very different, others haven't changed at all. The local tough boys are now local tough men and threaten a not-so-friendly basketball rematch. Meanwhile, Hollywood agent Adam Sandler and his friends Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, David Spade and Kevin James are all in varying degrees of midlife crisis. Their spoiled children and glamorous if neurotic wives (Salma Hayek and Maria Bello) contrast with 76-year-old Joyce Van Patten who, as the partner of new-agey Schneider, represents a kooky but genuine kind of love. Director Dennis Dugan keeps the pace snappy, but with a large cast and copious ad-libbing from the leads (whose off-screen friendships date back over 20 years), the impressive abilities of this ensemble go underused in a clichéd comedy that stalls at nice and stupid on its way to profundity.
