Review

Our Score
Influential director Shyam Benegal's earnest rural morality tale stars Girish Karnad's as the enlightened doctor who arrives in a remote village to confound the forces of conservatism and establish a milk co-operative. The drama consistently recalls the socialist realist films produced in the Soviet Union in the 1930s, but Benegal spices things up with an affair between Karnad and local activist Smita Patil. Despite the legend that it was funded by two-rupee donations from 500,000 Gujarati farmers, it was actually financed by the National Dairy Development Board in a bid to improve its tarnished reputation.
