Jock Mahoney had been around as a stunt man and bit-part player before being given the lead in minor westerns such as this Universal movie. Unfortunately, he's no more than adequate playing the American Civil War veteran who refuses to carry a gun as sheriff of Abilene. Much better is Lyle Bettger, who gives a typically intense performance as the one-armed cattle king who has taken Mahoney's girl - Martha Hyer - and wants him dead. Producer Howard Christie liked the story so much he re-made it 11 years later as Gunfight in Abilene with Bobby Darin, Emily Banks and Leslie Nielsen.
Plot Summary
Western starring Jock Mahoney and Martha Hyer. The former sheriff of Abilene runs into trouble on returning home from the Civil War having accidentally killed a friend's brother during the conflict.
