Who knew the 16th President of the United States was the scourge of the undead? Seth Grahame-Smith adapts his own novel for this outlandish, action-packed story, brought to life by director Timur Bekmambetov, whose imaginative action scenes have fuelled the likes of Night Watch, Day Watch and Wanted. Benjamin Walker makes for a likeable, credible hero, holding his own through the main vampire action and the anti-slavery subplot, however improbable it all becomes. Terrific supporting turns from Anthony Mackie and Dominic Cooper add spice to a wildly enjoyable supernatural yarn that's guaranteed to have you leaping out of your seat. The premise may be pretty ridiculous, but this movie surprises by actually making sense.
