The King and Queen of Moonlight Bay

The King and Queen of Moonlight Bay

Sam Pillsbury (2003)

Our Score
No, this isn't a reunion for Doris Day and Gordon MacRae after their folksy 1951 musical On Moonlight Bay, but Michael de Guzman's adaptation of his own novel about a teenager trying to forge a relationship with her estranged father. Set over a summer in Arizona, the largely melodramatic action centres on the determinedly optimistic Kristen Bell and her dad, handyman Tim Matheson, an alcoholic who fights shy of commitment to his long-suffering girlfriend (Sean Young). It's predictable stuff, but subplots involving platitude-spouting academic Ed Asner and boy-next-door Bug Hall just about prevent things from becoming too syrupy.

A reclusive and emotionally wrecked handyman is reunited with the estranged 17-year-old daughter he left behind years before, and embarks on the task of repairing their fragile relationship - but the pair face an uphill struggle because they share the same stubborn streak. Drama, based on Michael De Guzman's novel, starring Tim Matheson, Sean Young and Kristen Bell.
