Assembling a who's-who line-up of action hero pals, writer and director Sylvester Stallone would appear to fancy himself as the head of a modern-day, musclebound Rat Pack in this over-the-top shoot-'em-up. Sly plays mercenary Barney Ross, hired to infiltrate a small South American country and overthrow its ruthless dictator, who has drugs links to a rogue CIA operative (Eric Roberts). However, after failing to rescue fiery freedom fighter Sandra (Giselle Itie) on a reconnaissance mission, he returns mob-handed - with Jason Statham, Jet Li, Terry Crews and Randy Couture - for a final explosive showdown. The impressive-sounding cast only temporarily distracts from a plot riddled with holes, clichéd dialogue and fight sequences too reliant on quick edits. Mickey Rourke scores points for a subtle supporting role, but a fleeting joint cameo by Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger (in his first film since becoming governor of California) appears to have been shoehorned into the script just to facilitate a couple of misfiring in-jokes.
Plot Summary
Action adventure starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham and Jet Li. A highly skilled group of mercenaries is commissioned by a shady operative to assassinate the murderous dictator of a South American island. But they should know that an operation like this is never straightforward.
