Review

Our Score
This New York reworking of the Gospel according to St Matthew following a famous off-Broadway theatrical workshop production is an uneasy enchantment that's halfway between holy foolishness and hippy indulgence. Director David Greene's musical nevertheless has moments of infectious glee as Gospel parables are narrated by a Christ figure (Victor Garber) in a Superman sweatshirt and workman's overalls. Though it won't make you turn on or drop out, to use the jargon of the time, it's worth tuning in. This innocent remnant of the flower-power era is far less calculated and mercenary than the same year's Jesus Christ Superstar. In the UK, the role was played by David Essex among others.
