The Scamp

The Scamp

Wolf Rilla (1957)

Our Score
Having made his name in the title role of the Australian-set drama Smiley, contemporary critics had high hopes for ten-year-old Colin Petersen. He tries hard in this well intentioned story of a delinquent given a second chance, but he never convinces either as the urchin son of alcoholic music-hall actor Terence Morgan or as the confused kid cajoled by teacher Richard Attenborough and his wife Dorothy Alison. It must have been a relief to Attenborough not to have been given the juvenile lead himself (having just stopped playing tearaways three years earlier!), but that doesn't excuse his overdoing the glutinous bourgeois benevolence.

A schoolteacher befriends a tearaway youngster neglected by his drunken vaudeville performer father. But when the boy has a brush with the law, he is returned to his neglectful parent, with tragic consequences. Drama, starring Richard Attenborough, Terence Morgan, Dorothy Alison and Colin Peterson.
