Our Score
"An inexplicably dreadful piece of multilingual nonsense about the war", wrote Charles Laughton's biographer, Simon Callow, of this naval drama. Produced in Italy by Dino De Laurentiis with an Italian director and crew, it stars Laughton as a British bulldog admiral and Van Heflin as a German skipper playing cat and mouse with each other. While Van Heflin is not your usual card-carrying Nazi, just a clever tactician, Laughton goes for the full Churchillian effect. A derisory love story with French import Mylène Demongeot is thrown in but just slows things up considerably.

A cunning German captain disguises his ship as an Allied merchant vessel so he can get close to his targets and catch them unawares - but also gains a reputation for showing mercy to his captured enemies. A British admiral masterminds a plan to locate and destroy the elusive raider. Second World War drama, starring Charles Laughton and Van Heflin.
