A love triangle of the weirdest kind lies at the heart of this dark but refreshingly kind-hearted romantic comedy. John C Reilly plays John, the underdog lead, a man still pining for his ex-wife (Catherine Keener) when a chance meeting at a party introduces him to single mother Molly (Marisa Tomei). Molly is interested, and John can't believe his luck ("Are you flirting with me? I'm like Shrek!" he roars), but the relationship is tested when John meets Molly's owlish 20-something son, Cyrus (Jonah Hill). At first, the "child" seems welcoming and warm, but from the day John can't find his shoes, he begins to suspect that Cyrus has a hidden, sinister agenda. He's right, and the battle of wits that follows is both funny and human, with a rewarding, upbeat and emotional pay-off that makes a welcome change from the increasingly irony-enriched fare we've come to expect.
