Adam Sandler plays the plucky underdog yet again in this inventive, family-friendly Disney fantasy comedy about a put-upon hotel handyman whose tall tales not only entertain his niece and nephew, but have a funny way of coming true. This makes him wonder, if he tailors his stories to his own advantage, might he, too, achieve his thwarted ambitions in real life? It's not hard to see where this feel-good frolic is going, but there are plenty of amusing diversions on the way. The stories themselves whisk us amiably to medieval England, the Wild West and outer space, and if the movie's never quite laugh-out-loud funny, it's jaunty enough and skips along at a decent clip. Sandlerphobes can rest assured that he's less irritating than usual, and there are the additional curiosities of Guy Pearce's alarmingly camp hotel manager, and Russell Brand on best behaviour as our hero's wisecracking pal.
