Our Score
Writer/director Robin Swicord's cosy romantic comedy follows the members of a California book group set up by six-time divorcee Kathy Baker, who find their personal relationship dramas echoed in the works of Jane Austen. Maria Bello delivers the most down-to-earth turn as Jocelyn, a character not unlike the heroine of Austen's Emma, who is so busy trying to fix up her recently ditched pal (an angst-ridden Amy Brenneman) that she doesn't spot the flaws in her own love life. Hugh Dancy trades on his geeky charm as the hapless suitor caught between the two friends, while Emily Blunt has the toughest task, blending comedy and pathos as a French teacher whose gothic state of mind makes her feel as if she's trapped in Northanger Abbey. Engaging performances and witty dialogue make up for sometimes laboured storytelling and, at times, Swicord does get beyond the quaintness of the premise to show how Austen's observations are still relevant to the romantic woes of the modern woman.
