The Testament of Dr Mabuse

Fritz Lang always liked to boast that the second part of his celebrated crime trilogy was such a calculated insult to the Nazis that he feared for his life. Always one to embroider his own legend, Lang was nevertheless correct in claiming that the depiction of a master criminal who hypnotised people into doing his evil bidding was a bit near the knuckle for Goebbels, who had the film banned. Yet Lang's wife and co-scenarist, Thea von Harbou, was a committed Nazi who refused to follow her husband into French exile. Whatever the motivational truth, this is still a dark tale, told with atmospheric panache.

Plot Summary

The legendary criminal mastermind, now confined in an asylum, hypnotises his psychiatrist and inaugurates a fresh reign of terror. Thriller, directed and co-written by Fritz Lang and starring Rudolf Klein-Rogge and Gustav Diessl.
